What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a treatment in which a patient breathes pure oxygen for a period of time while enclosed in a chamber pressurized to greater than atmospheric pressure. This is accomplished with a clear, comfortable, large single occupant (monoplace) chamber.
How does it work? While breathing pure oxygen, the patient's blood plasma becomes super saturated with oxygen, carrying up to ten times the normal amount of oxygen to the body's tissues. The body's natural wound healing mechanisms, which are oxygen dependent, are able to function more efficiently. This includes the growth of new capillaries into tissues that have a poor blood supply. In addition, certain types of harmful bacteria do not survive well in high oxygen environments and HBOT can kill or at least inhibit further production of the tissue toxins produced by these bacteria.
What to Expect
When you come for your first visit to the center, you will meet with our staff for a complete examination, medical history, and evaluation of your wound. Our Wound Care Team will establish a treatment plan that will address your wound and explain the treatment to you. Please come prepared to stay for about 90 minutes. Wear comfortable clothes; bring all medications and insurance information with you. If you think your shoes caused your wound, please bring them with you.
This information may be shared with your primary care physician.
Patient care at Shreveport Hyperbaric and Wound Care Center will focus on a whole body approach to wound healing including:
Nutritional assessment and counseling
Diabetic counseling
Patient and caregiver counseling
Special needs for pressure relief including beds, seat cushions and footwear
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy services if needed
Our goal is to heal your wound as quickly as possible. We depend on your help by following your wound care instructions. Our team of experts will do everything possible to make each visit comfortable.
